Our School Dog Rosie

Arley Primary Academy > Parent Information > Our School Dog Rosie

Arley Primary Academy has decided to take on a school dog. The puppy belongs to Miss Scaife, our Learning Mentor and DSL here at Arley. This is a decision that has been made following a significant amount of research and discussion with other schools who have a school dog established. The puppy will grow up in the school environment becoming fully to the routines of the day and supportive of students within the school.

There are many benefits to having a school dog:

  • A calming effect on pupils.
  • Encouraging participation with withdrawn children.
  • Fostering a sense of responsibility.
  • Increasing enthusiasm for enjoyment of animals which motivates thinking and learning.
  • Teaching children to nurture and respect life.
  • Improves attendance.
  • Helps to build confidence in reading.

The puppy is called Rosie and lives with Miss Scaife and her family. Rosie is a 4-month-old cockapoo. She loves social interaction, going on walks and is very out-going. Rosie will be introduced to the school environment and students gradually after half-term.

As a school we accept that interacting with animals is not appropriate for all children therefore any parent/carer who does not wish their child to interact with the dog is advised to let Mrs Parkes or Miss Scaife know. Please also ensure your child’s medical record is up-to-date and the school has been made aware of any allergies.

We hope students will gain a great deal of enjoyment from having a school dog and that she becomes an established part of life at Arley Primary Academy.
